Fairmount Cemetery Tour

Fairmount Cemetery Tour

Our next Newarkology tour is going to be of Fairmount Cemetery, one of the finest oases of open space and art in the City of Newark. (see my first feature here and my second feature here. Some readers may find a visit to a cemetery odd, but a Victorian-era cemetery like Fairmount will appeal to any open-minded person who likes history, art, and greenery.

Fairmount Cemetery contains the graves of many of Newark’s most eminent citizens. Join us as we visit the graves belonging to famous Newarkers like Fred Hartley (of Taft-Hartley fame), Clara Maass, Gottfried Krueger, Christian Feigenspan, Joseph Hensler, and Gerhard Heinrich Mennen. We will visit graves of Newarkers less known today, but whose graves have artistic merit. We will pay our respects at Fairmount’s two monuments built to collective efforts – the Founding of Newark and the Civil War.

In addition to seeing various graves and monuments, we will also learn about Victorian mourning traditions. We will NOT be covering any ghost stories.

The tour will begin at 1:00 Sunday, October 14th inside the main entrance of Fairmount Cemetery at
620 Central Avenue Newark, New Jersey. Parking is available inside the cemetery. We will be doing less walking than in our neighborhood tours, so the length of the tour will be 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The cost is $5 for people who have never been on a Newarkhistory.com tour before. Larger donations will be accepted.

The rain date is Sunday, October 21st at 1:00. Check the front page of newarkhistory.com for an announcement of postponement.
