Come discover a little known gem of landscape design, history, and architecture in Newark's North Ward at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Mt. Pleasant Cemetery is 40 beautiful acres of graves, monuments, and towering trees and 250 years of Newark history waiting to be found. Come learn about the industrial, literary, and political leaders who made Newark, New Jersey one of 19th Century America's greatest cities.
Yet Mt. Pleasant Cemetery is more than just a final resting place to dozens of eminent Newarkers, it represents the importance of mourning in Victorian culture. We'll also discuss Victorian recreation and how cemeteries like Mt. Pleasant inspired parks, from Central Park to Branch Brook. If you're curious about how Newark's economic and social landscape was made this tour is for you.
The cost of the tour is $10 for adults, $5 for anyone aged 13-18, and free for anyone younger.
Public transit is available via New Jersey Transit's #13 bus. If you are driving please park along Broadway by the cemetery.
